Build a better blackberry lemonade!
I absolutely love lemonade. It’s a staple beverage during the summer. But those powdered lemonades leave a lot to be desired as far as ingredients, taste and, let’s be honest, after-taste. Last summer, the fast food chain Wendy’s had an awesome blackberry lemonade that I craved daily. The problem was I had to drive 30 minutes to get one. (Ah, the joys of living in the country!) Not to mention the hefty $4 per glass price tag.
I knew I could do better. So I got to work in the kitchen.
When I’m buying lemons for lemonade, I like ones that aren’t super firm. It makes them easier to press and I think they are juicier. For 2 quarts of lemonade, you’ll need 5-6 lemons, a 1/2 pint of blackberries (washed), 2 cups of sugar and some water.
Slice those lemons in half and press all the juice out. We need 1 1/2 cups of lemon juice- minus any seeds, of course. Add that to the pitcher.
Next, put the blackberries in the Manual Food Processor and process them down to something resembling a sauce consistency. Then add it to the pitcher. You’re almost done!
Time for the water and sugar. Since the blackberries are bitter along with the lemons, we need to add a little more sugar than usual. Here’s a tip: heat up 6 cups of water and then add 2 cups of sugar. This helps the sugar melt into the water more efficiently. Add more sugar if you like it sweeter. I enjoy my lemonade with a little tang to it. Add ice and enjoy!!
Tip: Process the leftover berries and put them over vanilla ice cream! You’re welcome. 🙂
- 5-6 lemons; 1½ cups lemon juice
- ½ pint blackberries, washed
- 2 cups sugar
- 7 cups water
- Squeeze lemons and pour into pitcher.
- Use Manual Food Processor to process blackberries into a sauce-like consistency. Add to the pitcher with the lemon juice.
- Heat water and add the sugar. Stir to dissolve sugar then add to pitcher.
- Stir together, add ice and enjoy!
Add additional sugar if you like it sweeter. This recipe has a bit of tart to it.
Leftover berries? Process them up and put them on top of vanilla ice cream!
